Happy Saturday

Back from Seattle already! Yikes that was a quick trip.
My hubby and girls went a few days before me while I stayed behind for exams I had to take.
I so look forward to that trip every year.
My girls get to see their cousins (I barely see my girls at all),
grandparents, aunt, and uncle. This year we played a lot of wii "Just Dance 2 and 3" hahah
Yeah, so maybe not such a traditional kinda family (though dinner was- and dang a brined turkey is to die for!). The company and food are great, and walks in the rain are enchanting. More pics to follow..

Before I got there, Erick was sending me cute shots of the girls traveling
so I thought I'd show him what the dogs
and I were up to :D

This is cat watch 5000!

How rad is Banana?
And no, Molly doesn't have time to smile when there is a potential cat to spot!
Hope you have a fantastic holiday with family, friends, food, and bellies full of the best food!
Happy Saturday-
It's a gorgeous fall-ish day with a warm wind and changing foliage! LOVE it!

Coconut Oil

If you know this song, you know I'm the punk
that's gonna get this tune stuck in your head for the rest of the day!!! HA!
I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts.... do deedely doo
If you haven't heard it before, enjoy the kooky-ness of  Merv Griffin from 1950!

So the reason I'm bringing up the coconut theme is because I'm giving the
pulpy tropical fruit a try in the form of coconut oil.
I've read, for the LAST time, (without giving it a try)
how great of a cooking oil it is since it keeps its healthy
properties even under high heat.

There was some "controversy" over coconut oil being a bad saturated fat
(which usually is a bad thing that leads to things like atherosclerosis- hardening of arteries
and thus CAD- coronary artery disease.)
See below for the dispelling of this myth.

I tested it in some chicken soup recently by using the coconut oil for sautéing onions, garlic, celery, and carrots for the base of the soup. After finishing a bowl, my hubby saw it in the kitchen and asked why I bought it. I kinda laughed and told him I was experimenting... and did he taste it in the soup? He said no, and he's a "let me get in the kitchen, I know my way around" kinda dude... I'm sure the flavor would show up in certain dishes though!

some beach coconut tree pictures, backgrounds and images

People who are coco-Nuts consume about 2 Tablespoons a day by mouth.
I've read about adding it to smoothies and oatmeal....etc
I was quite impressed with how good it is over all for the entire body, and not limited to ingestion
but as a topical agent for skin/face and hair/scalp! Not to mention, a great massage oil...
gotta try that one :)

I've been using it for about a week now on my face as a moisturizer and love it.
My friend Anne turned me on to it a while back as a moisturizer and I liked it, but wanted to research it more before making it part of my daily regime.
With blemishes, the last thing you'd think of to rub all over your face is some oil, no?
With the right amount, it just absorbs right into your skin and doesn't leave it oily!

"It sounds expensive...." "It's the cheapest ($*% there is..."
"It sounds addicting." "It's non-habit forming"
sorry- movie quote...

I'm surprised though, at it's way of making my skin feel "dewy" and youthful.
Kinda like this:

Like a bubble on grass???? NO. Hydrated and refreshed... hahaha
oh man, it's getting late and I'm laughing by myself (again).
What's in this pop-up-bowl-microwave pop corn anyway???

K, this is a non-scientific observation... the oil is solid at room temperature
but when you put it on your hands (to use as a face lotion), it immediately melts.
I worried a little when I went to cook with it
because when I tried to wash it off the spoon (with cold water),
it had that butter in cold water effect- you know? that greasy residue- EHHHHCCHC!
That residue totally grosses me out. At body temp, the coconut oil melts quickly though, so I
have a sneaking suspicion that these coconut gurus are right about your body utilizing this form
of saturated fat- WAY easier, and in a better way, than animal fat.
It takes a BBQs heat to melt that yummy meat fat! Mmm filet mignon....
pic

And... now a more scientific explanation.
This is what Mercola has to say about it:
"Fats are categorized as either short-, medium-, or long-chain depending on how many carbon molecules they contain. Close to two-thirds of the saturated fat in coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids, which have antimicrobial properties, are easily digested by the body for quick energy, and are beneficial to the immune system. Far from being dangerous, the saturated fat in coconut oil is actually health promoting."

Not sure on the reliability of this source, but here are some other benefits of coconut oil
and yup, that's where I borrowed the cool coconut shot from. :D

This is the one I'm using.. and that tiny jar shall be my travel companion!
P.S. After carting that jar back and forth from kitchen to bathroom, I'd highly suggest
buying one for each occasion, or just finding a glass jar to split it up! ;)

So how about it??
Have you tried it, hate it, love it?
I'm just scratching the surface of it's usefulness and would love to hear your opinions!

nicky

Sigh of Relief

We had a big scare yesterday with an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
Makes me extra grateful for a healing and compassionate Creator to be watching over us (all)!
I love me, my Jesus!!!!

Today I'm thankful for the little things, like having this guy around :D

And for these lil snuggle bugs... and how they like to climb into bed with us
in the morning to cuddle before hopping up and getting ready for school.

And how they bicker but then you'll catch em sweetly playing together
and looking out for each other

I mean, really? Look at those lil faces!
(yes, even the white devil

And for my very own dog whisperer! ;)
And our sweet brown dog, Banana, who is a rescue from the pound-puppy.
I feel blessed through and through- and am
extra grateful for life, our family, and our dear friends!

Go hug someone you love and take some extra time,
it's always worth it :D
Love and blessings to you!

Nicky

Halloween 2011

We threw a 65th Halloween bday costume party for my stepdad the Saturday before Halloween
and always dress up to take the kids trick or treating.
That means TWO chances to dress up this year (cause who doesn't like dressing up?) :D

We usually throw a little shindig on Halloween night. Chili, trick or treating, projected movie in the backyard by the fireplace... but since it fell on a Monday it was a bit quieter.
Still a lot of fun though :D

I went as Amy Winehouse! I wanted to draw more of her tatoos, but it was a little difficult.
I got her shirt pocket one on the chest that says "Blake's".
RIP you talented beautiful woman!

Amy, Cop, and White Swan :D

Ah, the outdoor fireplace

Anne, Ruben and their Dark family this year- except lil Shaner's, the cowboy :D

PART TWO: Halloween Night

Bat girl and her hubby and boy joined us for the night.
We dug down into our Halloween box to find a pair of bee wings and
an old ugly brown mullet wig. WaLa! I just threw on a vintage black dress I had and some tights :D

This is my make-shift bee hive do!
I'll give a tutorial soon on the funky do's from this Halloween.
I was having fun with my waist long hair this year!

Happy Wednesday!
Hope you're having a good week thus far :D
